When we choose to be offended it often leads to resentment, and living with resentment is a miserable way to live. We start down a dark path of seeing everything that is wrong with the people that we resent and unless we change our thinking it just keeps getting worse to the point where it turns to hate. Living with hate is like living in the dark which in turn prevents us from fully experiencing what God desires for us. I like how this verse calls it a root, a root starts out small and can be easily removed but the more it grows, the deeper it sets in the ground, to the point where you need special machinery to get it out. Resentment works the same way.
