Good Morning!
But whatever [word] comes out of the mouth comes from the heart, and this is what defiles and dishonors the man. For out of the heart come evil thoughts and plans, murders, adulteries, sexual immoralities, thefts, false testimonies, slanders (verbal abuse, irreverent speech, blaspheming). -Matthew 15:18-19
Our words have power and our words often show the condition of our heart. Can we control out words and still have evil thoughts? Sure we can, but when we control our words we also control our thoughts and the chances of changing our thoughts are much greater than if we don’t try to control either. Earlier in my life I was under the impression that your thoughts are your thoughts and you don’t really have control over them and that it’s just a matter of what comes out of your mouth that you can control. I have since discovered that is not true, we can control our thoughts, but a lot like our bodies, our mind is hard to keep healthy if we continue to feed it junk. What we take in, the movies we watch, the media we take in, the books we read, etc. all has bearing on how healthy our thoughts are. Change your diet and the outcome will look different. The difference about thoughts and words is that thoughts we can repent of and address and that is between us and God, but words cannot be unsaid or taken back and will cause damage beyond our control. Like anything in God’s great creation, words can also build up and change the world for good. Today, choose your words wisely.
“Words can inspire, and words can destroy. Choose yours well.” -Robin Sharma
“The power of words is immense. A well-chosen word has often sufficed to stop a flying army, to change defeat into victory and to save an empire.” -Ernie de Girardin
